FROM THE RECTOR'S DESK:
Do you know that we are now 9 months from Christmas? I know, it seems silly to be thinking about Christmas when we are smack dab in the middle of Lent, but this week holds a very important event in our calendar year.
On March 25th we celebrate the Feast of the Annunciation, the day when the Holy Spirit comes to Mary and utters those fated words, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favour with God" (Luke 1:26-28). It is in this moment when the God's plan for salvation is put into motion, as despite all the implications - the public shame, the risk to her relationship with family and Joseph and more - Mary said yes, "let it be according to your will." This event, known as the Annunciation, signifies the moment God came to dwell with us, intertwining divine action with human history. This day is precisely nine months before Christmas, underlining its significance in leading to the birth of Christ.
While today this day is rarely observed in the Anglican church, it is still worth noting, as the whole course of history, the whole entirety of our faith, our calendar and so much of western culture would be entirely different - if Mary had not taken the leap of faith and said Yes to God's working in and through her. But it isn’t just about Mary, as this is important for us in our life of faith as well, as it is all about the connection of divine love and the human heart’s ability to respond. Through this story, we are reminded of how important it is to accept God’s call in our lives – trusting that God is with us no matter where the Holy One leads.
So this week, as we continue our Lenten journey,, lets also take a moment to give thanks for the young girl who first said yes to God. For the example of trust and faith that she holds for us, and as we move towards Holy Week, remember that without Mary, there may have never been a cross.
Peace,
Kirsten +
GOOD FRIDAY READERS
Friends, this year for Good Friday we will be metaphorically walking the stations of the cross and gathering at St. Edmunds at 1pm on April 19th. As plans begin to fall into place for Holy Week, Kirsten is looking for folks who might be willing to read a short passage from scripture as part of the Good Friday Service. As there are 14 stations, we will be needing a number of readers so if you are willing to come along to St. Edmunds at 1pm on Good Friday and are comfortable reading, please let Kirsten or the office know.
