FROM THE DESK OF THE RECTOR

I received this poem from my Tante Nelleke so many years ago, in her own beautiful handwriting.  In it, wisdom I couldn’t appreciate at that time of my youth but now resonate with at the core of my being.  Autumn is my favourite time of year - the colours, smells, the warm afternoon light, cooler days for walking nature’s paths, and dark evenings inside by the fire.  A time to bring out crafts and make soup, to write letters and read books.  I love Autumn and this weekend we will celebrate Thanksgiving, which is really a way of life, if we choose to adopt it.

Leisure

What is this life if full of care
We have no time to stand and stare?

No time to stand beneath the boughs
And stare as long as sheep or cows.

No time to see, when woods we pass,
Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass.

No time to see, in broad daylight
Streams full of stars, like skies at night.

No time to turn at Beauty’s glance
And watch her feet, how they can dance.

No time to wait till her mouth can
Enrich that smile her eyes began.

A poor life this, if full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.

The Operation Christmas Child Campaign is now under way.    Pick up an empty shoebox from the narthex in the church and fill it with items to be sent to needy children in Western Africa and Central America.

Suggestions for how to fill the box are included. Each shoebox presented gives a child an opportunity to hear the gospel and to share the good news with others.  Boxes will be collected from St. Mary’s the week of Nov. 15-21.  Shoeboxes can also be filled online if you prefer.

Please pray that many boxes will be filled and safely delivered.
Many thanks from the Oceanside Shoebox Team.
